Week 4 – Gamble pays off

The Colts season is in full swing and the Under 11 Knights beat Braywood by 25 runs and the Under 11 Royals beat Datchet by 52 runs.

The Under 9s recorded two wins against Boyne Hill by 232 runs and White Waltham by 70 runs.

The Under 15s had a good 9 wicket against Sandhurst. The Under 13s had an international friendly against the Switzerland Under 13 team on Friday evening. In a very competitive 25 over match the Under 13s were able to overcome their international opponents to record an impressive win. This week four of the side with be at the Racecourse Ground representing Berkshire Under 13s.

On Saturday the 1s looked to continue their progress at home to Burnham 2s. Despite thd downpour earlier in the morning the wicket and ground looked great and Burnham won the toss and decided to insert Ascot.

However, Ascot proved what a great wicket this was. James Gamble and Jack Kendall put on 86 the second wicket until Kendall was out for 52. James Wensley 33 then added 69 for the third wicket with Gamble to take the score up to 163 for 3.

The introduction of Ollie Dunnett then accelerated the scoring rate as they put on 96 for the fourth wicket until James Gamble fell for a well deserved 105.

The end of the innings saw some big hitting from Dunnett 59 and Andy Murray 17 not out as Ascot finished the 50 overs on 303 for 6.

Burnham looked to keep up with the run rate but lost wickets at regular intervals and could not establish a large stand with Harjot Singh top scoring on 33 and the 6th wicket providing the highest stand of the innings with 32.

The wickets were shared around by all the Ascot bowlers with Ellison, Brown, Dunnett and May taking two each and Wiggett and Murray one each.

In the end it was a comprehensive victory by 159 runs and the 1s are now in 2nd place in Division 2b. Next week the 1s travel to top of the table Hurst.

The 2s visited Slough 3s and were asked to bat by the opposition. Runs were hard to come by in the conditions and Ascot subsided to 74 for 8 with only Jeremy Wing making double figures reaching 74 for 8. In the end, Ascot were indebted to 63 not out from Jason Carr to get the total to 127 all out in the 44th over.

Sheryar Baig with 4 for 40 and Sulaiman Akhtar with 3 for 48 did the main damage.

Slough took control with a 60 run second wicket partnership between Kazim 41 and Afzaal 44 which helped Slough to a 5 wicket victory in the 33rd over.

A tough day at the office for the 2s and next week will see another stern test as they play top of the table NPL at home.

The 3s were away to Purley-on-Thames 2s and on winning the toss elected to bat first. All round contributions saw Ascot reach a respectable 239 for 8 dec in the 50th overs with good contributions from Dirk Benneyworth 51, Richard Baker 43, Graham Anderson 42 and Calum Dougal 31. Julian Fernando was best bowler with figures of 3 for 27.

However, Purley-on-Thames won the match at a canter scoring at 8 an over to win by 8 wickets in the 31st over. Tejpal Singh saw them home with 138 not out supported by 35 not out from George Clarke and 34 from Robert Clarke

Next week the 3s are at home to top of the table Finchampstead 4s.

The 4s entertained Kew 4s at Locks Ride. Kew won the toss and elected to bat first. Solid contributions from Shaan Khan 58, Amar Rathore 58 and M Govind 48 helped Kew to declare on 254 for 8 in 46 overs. Naeem Mohammad recorded figures of 5 for 110.

Ascot kept up with the run rate with Nino Trapani 62, Richard Ellison 44 and Alex Good 30 all helping but wickets fell at regular intervals and in the end Ascot hung on for the draw 9 wickets down as Mark Wiggett and Chris Thomason batted out the overs.

Alec Stuart was the pick of the Kew bowlers with 6 for 49.

Next week the 4s travel to ninth placed Finchampstead 5s.
